Welcome to VIDA!

Sheffield Domestic Abuse Forum becomes VIDA
VIDA is an independent voluntary sector organisation. We deliver specialist domestic and sexual abuse services and training, and engage with partners to work towards an end to domestic abuse, and violence against women and girls. Our new name means 'life' in Spanish - a positive assertion of what our work is all about.

From April 2015 VIDA became reliant on fundraising and income generation activities - including small donations via our Localgiving button. Please consider making a donation to support our work: every little really does help!!

VIDA's fundraising drive pays off...

We are thrilled to announce the success of VIDA's collaborative bid, with 4 other specialist organisations, to the new Big Lottery Women & Girls Initiative. BL are investing £45.5million in 63 projects that will empower women and girls to take control of their lives. They recognise that the women's sector has been significantly affected by cuts in public sector spending and competitive tendering processes, at a time when the issues we deal with have never been more prominent

The new grant of £750,000 over 4 years has been awarded to our exciting Women & Girls Recovery & Empowerment Partnership, to help address the shortage of longer term therapeutic services to support women and girls to recover and move on with their lives after experiences of abuse. VIDA will manage the contract, as lead partner, along with 3 other specialist women's organisations: Ashiana, Haven House and YWHP Sexual Abuse Support Service, working with Chilypep young people's participation project.

VIDA Director, Maureen Storey: This is an exciting opportunity to collaborate and see what works, to extend the reach of our therapeutic services to women and girls from different backgrounds, affected by any form of abuse. The focus of other services is often on short-term needs, and we struggle to fund the longer term therapeutic support that makes such a difference to recovery, and building resilience to future harm. We can achieve so much more by working together, with clearer pathways between our partner services and from external agencies. And Chilypep will be making sure service users are involved from the outset in ‘co-producing’ the project with us, and having a voice to influence future services in Sheffield.

VIDA can sustain and extend our Eva Therapy Service thanks to the BL grant and our other successful bids to Comic Relief, The Brelms Trust, Evan Cornish Foundation, Allen Lane Foundation and Sheffield Town Trust.

Other income generation: a huge thank you to everyone who came to VIDA's benefit night, helped us put the 'fun' into fundraising, and danced their socks off to the fabulous Free Radicals. We raised a brilliant £2,730 in one night! Our Localgiving total is now over £2,000 thanks to new donors, and some very welcome direct debits. And special thanks to our brave Eva service user for her amazing skydive, raising almost £1k for Eva with one jump!! [photo to follow]

VIDA have regrouped around our core aims, with a sharper focus on prevention, education and training to reduce future levels of abuse, and on recovery work with women and girls affected by abuse and trauma. We are seeing a climate change in attitudes towards domestic and sexual abuse and exploitation, with a resurgence in feminism and a growing recognition that the issues cannot be tackled effectively without a focus on gendered attitudes and behaviours.

VIDA are proud to be involved in initiatives like the Gender Respect Project  and public awareness events that engage the hearts and minds of people in Sheffield and beyond - like the One Billion Rising global campaign.
